Dental Implants and Diabetes: What Patients Should Know

by Marketing

Understanding the Connection

Diabetes isn’t automatically a barrier to dental implants. With good medical control and careful planning, many people with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes can receive implant treatment safely and predictably.
At Stockport Implant Centre, we assess every patient individually to ensure the best possible outcomes.

Type 2 Diabetes

  • Not a contraindication for implant treatment.

  • If blood sugar is well controlled (through diet and/or oral medication), treatment can proceed under normal implant protocols.

  • Ongoing communication with the patient’s GP or diabetic team is recommended.

Type 1 Diabetes

  • Insulin-dependent patients self-administer daily insulin.

  • Before treatment, we require a recent blood glucose or HbA1c result confirming that diabetes is well controlled.

  • Close collaboration with the patient’s medical practitioner ensures safe and predictable results.

Important Notes for All Diabetic Patients

  • Diabetic patients can have reduced immunity and a slightly higher risk of infection.

  • Research shows a small increase in implant failure rates, so it’s important to be open and transparent about this.

  • Regular follow-ups and communication between the dental and medical teams are vital.
